The Poetry of Ripples
Most water features are designed around the vertical movement of water, whether through fountains, cascades or falling sheets. The inspiration for Echo came from a simple question: what might happen if water were explored differently, across a horizontal plane rather than a vertical one?
This curiosity led to an exploration of ripples and the fascinating interactions that occur when waves travel across a still surface. As a ripple reaches the edge of a pool, part of its energy returns, crossing and interacting with subsequent waves. From this observation, Echo was born.
The sculpture generates ripples from two concentric rings, each of which can be programmed to operate at varying intervals. This creates an ever-changing dialogue between the expanding and returning waves. Ripples collide, merge, amplify and dissolve, producing an infinite sequence of patterns that can never be repeated in exactly the same way. The surface becomes a living canvas of movement, where each pulse appears to explode outward before gently imploding back into stillness.
The result is both visually captivating and deeply calming. Echo invites quiet observation, encouraging viewers to slow down and become absorbed in the subtle rhythms of water. Its constantly evolving patterns create a meditative quality that inspires reflection and promotes a sense of wellbeing, making it equally suited to public landscapes, private gardens and contemplative spaces.
A version of Echo was featured in the World Vision Garden at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, where its hypnotic effect attracted the attention of celebrity visitors, leading garden designers and landscape professionals. It was notably described as the “Best water feature in show” by renowned garden designer Toby Buckland.
For enhanced visual impact, Echo can be fitted with a ring of integrated LED lighting housed within a remote-controlled metal ring. Mechanical and electrical systems can be incorporated either within the feature itself or located remotely, offering flexibility for a wide range of installations.
